Behold what Max is holding up!

It’s an art piece I made—a steel eye socket with copper leaf and a resin eyeball that will light up. It will be attached to one of the “pods” of Mutopia Evolution, a fire sculpture by the Flaming Lotus Girls that will debut at Burning Man 2023: https://www.flaminglotus.com/ and https://www.flaminglotus.com/sculptures/mutopia.

I created the eyeball shape, including the fringed eyelashes, in Adobe Illustrator. Senior Fire Shop Goddess Sam Cooper showed me how to cut it out of metal using the computer-controlled CNC plasma cutter. I bent the upper and lower lids to match the curve of the eye socket, and Expert Welder Jessika joined them in place. I brushed gilding adhesive on the surfaces of the eye, then delicately applied copper leaf, to match Mutopia’s copper paint.

The half-spherical iris was made out of resin by Disco, another FLG electronics genius, who also embedded a programmable LED inside. The iris is clear resin, colored and made partially opaque by mixing in acrylic paint.

What evil patterns will the Eyeball of Doom flash out? Or will it just be S-O-S, over and over?

"Pods" with trilateral symmetry are arranged in a rough square and numbered 5 through 8 clockwise from lower right. "Nicola's Eyeball" (highlighted) and two other creatures will be attached to the center of Pod 8.
